Why Ultrasound-Guided Injections Matter

Precision Matters

Successful orthopedic injections depend on more than the medication or orthobiologic being used—they also depend on delivering the treatment accurately to the intended tissue.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound allows Dr. Melanie Worley to visualize tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves, joints, and surrounding structures in real time, ensuring precise diagnosis and treatment. Every injection at IOSD is performed with a focus on accuracy and safety.

Benefits of Ultrasound Guidance

Improved Accuracy

Ultrasound provides real-time visualization of the target tissue, allowing treatment to be delivered precisely where it is intended rather than relying solely on anatomical landmarks.

Enhanced Safety

Important structures such as nerves, blood vessels, and tendons can be identified and avoided during the procedure, improving procedural safety.

Better Diagnostic Precision

Ultrasound is more than an injection tool—it allows Dr. Worley to evaluate muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerves during your examination, helping identify the true source of pain and tailor your treatment plan.

Dynamic Examination

Unlike MRI or X-rays, ultrasound allows tissues to be evaluated while they are moving. This can provide valuable information for diagnosing many tendon, muscle, and ligament injuries.

No Radiation Exposure

Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation, making it a safe imaging modality for both diagnostic evaluations and image-guided procedures.

Real-Time Confirmation

During every procedure, the needle can be visualized in real time, helping ensure accurate placement of PRP, Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC), or other orthopedic injections.

Why is Image
Guidance Important?

Research has demonstrated that the accuracy of orthopedic injections varies considerably depending on the joint or tendon being treated when performed without imaging. Ultrasound guidance has been shown to improve injection accuracy across many musculoskeletal procedures, with a 2026 systematic review of knee injections reporting 95.4% accuracy with ultrasound guidance compared with 82.0% using landmark guidance alone.

When performing advanced orthobiologic procedures such as PRP and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC), precision becomes even more important. Ultrasound guidance allows Dr. Worley to visualize the target in real time and accurately deliver treatment to the intended area of pathology.
